An effort is underway to develop a Near InfraRed spectroscopy capability at the JPLTable Mountain Observatory. To this end a visible- infrared imaging spectrometer (VIRIS) is being integrated with the 0.6-m telescope. Demonstration spectra of Jovian planets will be obtained.
|Guillermo Monay (ELAC) and Adrian
Esqueda (LACC) have just built the VIRIS control computer out of a spare
PC and several custom computer cards.
They have just installed the Win 98 operating system and the VIRIS control program.
Guillermo (left) is making notes on his laptop while Adrian (right) is testing the control software.
This project is located at the JPL Table Mountain Observatory.
|Right: Adrian, Guillermo and Dr. Gillam reviewing the vacuum pump-down procedure|
|Left: They have attached the VIRIS to a cryopump to evacuate the air
out of it prior to filling with liquid nitrogen coolant.
Adrian is carefully opening the cryogate after closing the valve to the roughing pump.
The required ultra-low pressure of approx 5e-6 Torr was reached after several hours. This indicated that no vacuum leaks were present.
