Sky is a sphere, and distances on a sphere are expressed in angles.
One old trick is to estimate the angles by using your fingers. The same techniques is used also by painters, photographers and movie people when setting up their shots. It is essential that in doing these estimates you always fully stretch out your arm.
The technique works because people with larger hands normally have longer arms, and vice versa. You should also keep in mind that these are just estimates, not precise measurements. One can do better, but for this you need more than just your hands.
